Who Dey? Me Well Dey.

mewelde.jpgThe pieces are beginning to fall into place. Without a huge excess of cap space this offseason the Steelers had to prioritize. Lock up Ben so that he can’t even begin to get emotionally hurt or start thinking about a future away from the 3 rivers and then, fill in the gaps.

There are several important needs that must be filled this offseason, OL, DL, relief RB, WR depth and Special Teams, just to name a few. The beauty of Mewelde Moore is that he will help the Steelers in all of the offensive and ST’s positions. He is exactly what the Steelers fans didn’t know that we needed. Getting Mewelde in the fold today was like receiving that Christmas present that you wish you could have thought of, on your own, to put on your list, if you only knew that you needed such a gadget.

The terms have not been disclosed but I’m certain MM was very affordable. He became an afterthought since Adrian Peterson arrived but when given the opportunity he was very capable. His YPC are impressive and the low mileage on his tires to go along with his 4 years of experience are a huge plus, not to mention his certain relationship with Mike Tomlin.

M. Moore’s versatility is his biggest asset, as mentioned earlier. Moore will upgrade and provide depth for at least 3 need positions this year. RB – that’s obvious. He is, by trade, a RB. He’s had the 3rd down role before so he should be able to get some tough yards and his 4.9 YPC is a nice number. He’s a clear upgrade over Najeh as the number 2 man in the backfield and gives instant relief to Willie, allowing Willie to be “fast” once again and do what he does best.

WR – Mewelde is a pass catcher. If nothing else, for the last few seasons in Minnesota, Mewelde has been a great pass catcher, something we’ve lacked as an out of the backfield weapon. You cna never have too many pass catchers.

OL – Because of his ability to catch the ball, the OL will indirectly look much better. His safety valve”ness” will allow Ben to dump the ball off in high pressure situations where he may have held the ball too long, tried to do too much with the pocket collapsing and taken a sack. Now he can swing it out to the flat and let Mewelde go.

KR/PR – As others have pointed out, the return man role has been a revolving door for way too long. Not sure if Mewelde is the long term answer here, but he certainly brings hope and experience that is greatly needed. Now if only he could tackle on special teams.

With Mewelde’s verstility come the freedom to invest in other areas. Najeh is suddenly on thin ice along with the other RB’s not named Willie Parker. The addition of MM brings some competition to the position that has been needed since Jerome retired. This signing also signifies the beginning of the end for Willie Reid.

Now let’s go get Bryant Johnson, stack up on OL and DL in the draft & call it a day.

My favorite thing about Mewelde…saying his name. ME Well Dey!
