The worst thing that could ever happen to the NFL is losing the salary cap. The moment owners would vote to remove the cap on salaries is the moment that the Steelers cease to be relevant.
Peter King from Si.com wrote the following as point #9 in “Things I Think I Think” from MMQB (full article):
9. I think, if I had to guess, that a third of the owners in this league would prefer a new labor deal without a salary cap to the labor deal that exists now. That’s dangerous for long-term league stability. Very dangerous. Expect the late-March league meeting in Palm Beach to be very much about that.
I hope and I pray that only 1/3 of the owners EVER feel this way. There are too many storied franchises that look to run a smart and competitive business…and succeed quite well at it. But they also are too smart, “business wise”, to remain competitive with the Jerry Jones’ and Daniel Snyder’s of the NFL world.
The day there is no salary cap in the NFL is the day that the Steelers become the Pirates. (eew, I just puked in my mouth)
